How to prepare for a CQC inspection

Inspections under the Single Assessment Framework look different from the old key lines of enquiry. Preparation is about evidence, culture and consistency — not a last-minute tidy-up.

Understand the quality statements

The CQC now assesses services against 34 quality statements grouped under the five key questions: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. Map your existing evidence — audits, feedback, incident reviews, training records — against each statement so you can see where you are strong and where gaps remain.

Gather evidence continuously

Inspectors triangulate: they compare what you say, what records show and what people using the service experience. Keep a live evidence file rather than scrambling before an announced visit. Care plans, medication audits, safeguarding referrals, complaints and compliments, supervision notes and governance meeting minutes all count.

Run a mock inspection

A fresh pair of eyes finds what familiarity hides. A structured mock inspection — ideally by someone external — tests your evidence, interviews staff and reviews the environment the way an inspector would, then gives you a prioritised action plan.

Close gaps honestly

Inspectors respond well to services that know their own weaknesses. A candid improvement plan with owners and deadlines demonstrates the well-led culture the framework rewards. What damages ratings is being unaware of problems, or knowing and doing nothing.

Prepare your team

Staff will be asked about safeguarding, consent, and how they raise concerns. Short briefings and practice questions build confidence far more effectively than a policy reminder the week before.
